Gotta Get a "Toby"

It was Monday morning and a new camp. Today we began our last segment of the Transformation Contest, our 3rd month. I saw lots of new faces this time, and that is awesome! I am all for spreading the joy, the habit of fitness, and the incredible sense of accomplishment you will reap when you come everyday to camp and start seeing the results! Its like a ripple effect. It will even mesmerize the people around you who don't take camp. That is exactly how powerful Adventure BootCamp seems to be! Your friends, coworkers, and family will see what you are doing and start creating a physical routine for themselves. I have heard it from many of our star campers! So now is the time to set the example for others and yourself. Spread the joy!

It was great to be back at camp. I had been sick with the flu and pneumonia and didn't get a lick of exercise or activity. I was the true bed potato! So I don't have to tell you how hard it was for me to set the alarm and start this day off.

But it was fun catching up with my buddies and how they did from last camp, as well as learning how they kept it together during off-week. The "Gold Star" came through with another 12lb weight loss. The fat just seems to be melting off of her! Yet she has worked hard for that. She runs 3x out of camp in the evenings and is cross training with other sports.

She is also watching her diet folks. She told me she really wanted something salty the other day. A bag of corn chips was whispering in her ear! Hee-hee! Now, I know I'm gonna eat at least a few if they are hanging out "up close and personal" like that within eye sight! Like I said before, I get visually stimulated.

This little lady decided she was simply to unwilling to record those calories in her iPod, so she licked the salt off a couple and then pitched them. Is that discipline or what?? Don't think I could do that with chocolate.

I asked another one of our seasoned veterans what she did to stay in shape during off-week. She always looks so fabulous, toned, mean and lean, and for me its a good thing to learn what successful people do to maintain. She did a lot of walking, worked out in a gym, and spent time with her cocker spaniel "Toby". She got lots of additional exercise walking with her dog, and it reminded me of how much more active I was when I had a dog that liked the outdoors.

I had a Wheaten Terrier, and we would go out in snow blizzards, pouring rain, whatever it was. It was sometimes below zero, and my dog and I would brave the elements. My wheaten really loved the snow the most, and loved to go swimming in the water. I would make extra trips to the park just to please her.

I took her to my father's farm on the weekends so she could run to her heart's delight. She would love to chase the cows. She was my baby, and I would do anything to make her happy. In the process, I was always on the move and was in great shape.

When I lost my last dog in 2005 to a brain tumor, I didn't have the heart to replace him. I grieved for months. It hurt my heart bad.

As I pondered my past and chatted with the Blazing B, I thought maybe it might be time for me to get a "Toby" for myself. Now some of you might not be in to caring for a dog, so your "Toby" might be something other than an animal. But anything that can give us pleasure, and an extra little boost to get out there and move, is worth having as an adjunct to hard core exercise. I have a friend who loves to dance, and for sure that is her "Toby"!

I think I am gonna have to get me a "Toby", and yes, it will probably be a dog. So friends and readers, get yourself your own "Toby" and watch your results start to multiply! Time to get our "Toby" on!

Our first day at camp was a workout for the total body. This was my first workout since my last camp. It was so tough to start over again after losing my momentum. I guess getting a full workout was just what I needed. We did all kinds of wholesome things, like squat jumps, line jump overs, chest flys, tricep kickbacks, and bicep curls. We also did some rows with bands from the trees. And we did some cardio which included some running.

Our cardio was comprised of running around the loop at 60 sec. intervals, and I was just too happy that the "Star" encouraged me to run with her. I didn't have a lot of confidence to run so soon after having pneumonia. I didn't want to hold her back from getting her best workout. But just like a first class trooper, she told me, "Come on, you can do it. Its only for a minute. Come on!" And there I went!

Thank you "Star" for being such a great fitness buddy!

As I performed our circuits, I watched Brian float around like a butterfly to attend to all our newcomers and those who needed some help with their form. Its one thing that always amazes me about our coach, because he is as attentive today as he was when I experienced my first camp with him more than a year ago. I love to know that I have a trainer that has such high standards for himself and for us. He cares about us getting the most from our time at Adventure, and checks us out to see if we are motivated, having a good time, and working as hard as we can within safe limits. Letting our form slide is not an option to him either. And I have experienced many trainers that are too tired to care.

Kudos to all our fabulous trainers that keep us straight!
Form is one of the most important elements in getting a high quality workout and it will have a tremendous impact on your results.

Ok, fitness warriors, this is Thanksgiving week, so let's make the most of our week at Adventure! And think about the "Toby" you are going to incorporate in your lifestyle. I know with all those beautiful High Definition televisions and Theatre Systems out there to lure us in to being obese couch potatos, we gotta get a "Toby" on our side. Rock on!
